Favorite Pet: Dog or Cat

Over the holidays we went to a Christmas celebration church service in Crystal Lake. Before the service began, they had a series of fun things – sort of like ice breakers. One was a series of choices posed to those in attendance. We were supposed to shout out our favorite choice of two options given; for instance, what flavor ice cream: vanilla, chocolate; best Christmas tree: artificial, real; favorite pet: dog or cat? The loudest answers: chocolate…real…dog. DOG – really?

For the newcomers to my blog, I will briefly explain that every January we take off for Florida in our motor home accompanied by our pet family – which seems to increase a little every year. I fondly call our motor home the Cat House on Wheels!

This year we left on December 18, earlier than usual, so we could close on our new house, pick up Mr. Silver and spend the holidays with daughter Kelly and family in Maryland.

Now most people, including at least one very close family member (!), think we are out of our minds for traveling with 8 cats and 2 dogs.

And guess what, most people are correct!

What a trip! Sometime between Christmas and New Years, Jim and I caught colds that quickly turned into bronchitis. A trip to the doctor was not very helpful.

Now when you are both sick and it is bitter cold outside and/or raining, who has to take the dogs out? It seemed like it was me, but to be honest, I think we evenly divided that chore. On the other hand, the cats were perfectly content to stay in the motor home and make sure we were warm and cozy. One night Jim woke up and he couldn’t move his legs. It startled him so he turned on the bedside lamp and found two cats lying on his legs. He looked over at me – he said I was lying on my back and two cats were lying on my chest. There were a total of six cats in bed with us!

Okay, so who is the best pet? A dog that has to go out in inclement weather or a cat that stays in and keeps you warm?

After New Year’s we decided heading south was the only way we could hope to find some warmer weather. Although Florida was strongly beckoning, we wanted to stop in North Carolina to visit friends Penny and John, and Jim’s sister Patty and husband, John. Great visits!

On January 8 we finally drove into Fort Myers. The sun felt so good! Although the cats love the motor home, they quickly adjusted to our home here, climbing on the cat trees and looking out the windows. Mr. Silver is happy to be with his harem.

And although we are still feeling under the weather, we are enjoying the slower pace, watching the palm trees swaying in the breeze, picking fruit off the cocktail tree, playing with the cats, and taking the dogs outside! Dogs…Cats – we love them both!

Everyone needs at least one bed warmer! They do not require electricity and double as alarm clocks!
