Forever Homes For Sophie’s Babies

All of Sophie’s eight babies have gone to their new homes. Grace and Zoe were the first to go – both to the same house! Mother, Staci and daughter, Hailey:

Grace fell in love with Hailey right from the beginning.

Staci knows how we feel about our kittens so she sent me updates right away.  This is one of her notes:

“One more update..they are both playing (hard!), have eaten and used the litter box. Zoe is already trying to get out of her room! We have informed her it is too soon. Grace is even snuggling with Hailey but Zoe won’t slow down enough to do that. They are doing way better than expected. So, you can rest rest tonight!!”

Sarah and John were excited to pick up Zoey (yes we had two by the same name in this litter – I am very glad they spelled the name differently!)  Sarah wrote me to say that Zoey decided she wanted some loving at 4:30 a.m.!  I told her Zoey must still have been on eastern time because usually Siberians wake you up at 5:30 a.m. 🙂

Darren is a student at the University of Illinois.  He shares a house with other students so I have a feeling Richard will get lots of attention which he will love!  From the very beginning he was the one that would run to us first when we came into the cattery room.  Jim affectionately called him Richard the Lion Hearted.  Darren said he is named after the tiger in “The Life of Pi.”

Aaron, Debbie, Colton and Abriana had been visiting friends in a neighboring state and stopped by here on the way home to pick up Talya.  Debbie said the long trip was a little easier because of the excitement of picking up their new family member.  My blog followers may think this family looks familiar and you would be right.  They are the proud family of Mishka who was from Sophie’s first litter.

Okay, so those were all the kittens picked up at our home in Girard.  Last Friday I put the three remaining kittens plus their mother, Sophie, in carriers and off we went to our son’s home in Woodstock to meet the remaining pet parents.  Friday was a day off from school for some children so this made it a perfect day for the kittens to join their new families with a long week-end to enjoy bonding.

First I got to meet Dane and his parents.  Dane is a delightful six year old boy who has been wanting a Siberian.  He already has one pet – a parrot.  Do you know that parrots live to be 75 to 100 years old! I sure did not.  Dane’s mom called me on Saturday to report Mitzi slept with Dane all night and had already adjusted to the entire family.  Dane is taking responsibility for his new kitten, even cleaning the litter box!

The next kitten was Malcolm.  This is quite a story.  Several months ago I received an email from a 14 year old girl by the name of Katie who wanted to get a Siberian because her brother was allergic to cats.  She worked all summer corn detassling (and if you city folks don’t know what that entails, let me tell you it is hard work!) saving the money so she could fulfill her dream and buy a kitten.  She had the money, but we didn’t have a kitten available but she decided to wait until we did.  So it meant so much to me to see the smile on Katie’s face when she was able to take Malcolm in her arms.

I believe that smile says it was worth the wait!

Okay, now Katie and Malcolm have left, and all that is left is Majesty and Sophie.  My grandson, Jack and I, kept them company so they wouldn’t be lonely.  On Sunday morning I drove to Palatine where my daughter lives to meet our last pet parent and also to do some allergy tests for prospective pet parents (that’s why Sophie made the trip with us).  Brittanie is from a neighboring state and since she was going to have to drive to pick up Majesty she decided to make a week-end of it in the Windy City.  After all, it was her birthday, and she wanted to celebrate!  And Majesty was the perfect present!  Brittanie and her friend picked up Majesty and were then going to go get a slice to energize them for the long trip home – I mean, really, you can’t go to Chicago and not enjoy a slice of the very best pizza!

Brittanie has been on our wait list a long time waiting for the perfect kitten and she found it in Majesty.

Is anyone wondering why the photos show the kittens wrapped in a blanket?  We have baby blankets spread all over the cattery soaking up the scents of their Mom and siblings.  Each of our new pet parents take one of the blankets, put it in the pet carrier they have brought with them, and thus the kitten still has something that smells and feels like “home.”  We believe this helps with the transition period.

So now we are kitten-less except for new princesses, Izzy and Lily.  They are both a delight – little purring machines. In fact, Izzy is helping me write this blog, sitting on my lap purring away!

But we won’t be kitten-less for long – Tia and Jackie are both due within the next week.  Stay tuned!
