Sunday in Girard

DSC_0080An October Sunday in Girard, IL–there is no other place I would rather be! The air is cool and crisp with a light breeze making ripples on the lake. The leaves are beginning to turn colors and many are fluttering to the ground which is something we will deal with later! Today I just want to enjoy this beautiful fall day.

Jim and I got up rather late, had a simple breakfast of English Muffins and coffee for Jim, Lady Grey tea for me. We showered, dressed for the day and then drove to church for the 10:30 service. Since we have been in Florida the last 6 weeks, we were welcomed back with genuine love. While in Florida we attended a large church several times. It was one of those churches that have kept up with the times – a five piece band playing very upbeat contemporary music – the words flashing on screens. While the minister is giving his sermon, you can text questions to him and at the end of the sermon, he looks at the texts and answers the questions. The “experts” say if we want to attract the younger generation to our churches, we have to keep up with the technological advances and make them a part of our worship. They are probably right but I have to tell you, although I enjoyed those services, I will take my cozy little church in Girard, IL with its friendly congregation, a single piano player and hymns like” How Great Thou Art” and “He Leadeth Me.”

Pastor Mary Alice had scheduled a sermon entitled “iPod? iPad? Try iPray…God is Listening” but, as so often happens, God had other ideas. So she changed her sermon completely and spoke about the difference other people make in our lives and how we can make a difference in another person’s life. She used the example of the wonderful movie, “Mr. Holland’s Opus.” She inspired us to love God and to love our neighbor.

We had not attended church the last two weeks we were in Florida. We justified our non-attendance because this trip was to work on our new “cat house” (a story for another time) and there was much to do before we needed to start back to Illinois. Was that justification flawed? I think, yes. Regular worship helps me to remember what God desires and motivates me to follow those desires.

And I was certainly motivated today, motivated by our inspiring pastor, our loving church family and the beauty of Girard – HOME!
