Cakes Not Cats!

Today I want to share with you a story of love and generosity. Almost five years ago, Jim and I joined the Girard United Methodist Church soon after our move to this area. It is a very small church in a very small town, but big in heart and big in love. Last year we as a congregation pledged a total of $5,000 to be given to our Conference Mission: Imagine No Malaria. This giving was to be spread over a five year period. Last year we had a a now infamous “Pie in the Pastor’s Face” event (don’t ask – you really don’t want to know!) and earned a little over $3,000. This year we decided to just put on a little dinner after church one Sunday followed by a dessert auction where we thought we would earn a few hundred dollars. Well, yesterday it happened. We had a delicious chicken dinner served by the United Methodist Men headed up by a saint of a man, Don Denby. Everyone was then given the opportunity to try any or all of the five cakes shown in the pictures. Afterwards we auctioned off 5 gift certificates and the winners would get one of the cakes at a later time of their choosing. There were around 40 people in attendance and we earned a grand total of $1,856.00! For the dinner we just put a basket on the table, and people put in whatever they wanted to donate and they were very generous. Then came the auction with Jim at the gavel. The chocolate cake went for $150 and I thought, this is unbelievable. Then the lemon raspberry cake went for $200 and we all went wild when the key lime white chocolate cake brought in $300! So in just two years, our little church reached its goal with 72 cents to spare: $5,000.72!
